Application differences between diamond and CBN grinding wheels
2025-04-16 13:58:21

Different grinding wheels should be used for different workpiece materials and processing requirements. Even when grinding the same workpiece material, the grinding ratio of different material grinding wheels may differ by 2-5 times, so it is necessary to choose a suitable/appropriate grinding wheel.

Diamond grinding wheel is the best tool for grinding non-metallic materials with high hardness and brittleness, such as hard alloys and ceramics, optical glass, gemstones, and stones. For example: tungsten carbide cutting tools, ceramics, glass and other workpieces. However, since diamond is easy to carbonize at 700 ℃ - 800 ℃, it is not suitable for grinding steel with high iron content.

The hardness of CBN is slightly lower than that of diamond, but it has good thermal stability (can withstand high temperatures from 1300 ℃ to 1400 ℃), is chemically inert with iron group elements, has high thermal conductivity, and the service life of grinding wheels made from it is long. Unlike diamond, which decomposes (i.e. oxidizes and graphitizes) at high temperatures, there is no chip sticking phenomenon during grinding and cutting of iron materials. It is suitable for the production and processing of hard and tough materials, especially ferrous metals, and is the best abrasive tool to replace corundum-grinding wheels for grinding hardened steel, bearing steel, high-speed tool steel, stainless steel, heat-resistant steel and titanium alloys, and other high hardness and toughness of metal materials. For example, a wide variety of steel parts, cast iron, etc., such as the following workpieces: automotive parts - crankshafts, camshafts, etc., hydraulic parts, compressor parts, etc.
